Mollens was a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Valais region of Switzerland. It was part of the Sierre district. On January 1, 2017, Mollens joined with three other towns – Chermignon, Montana, and Randogne – to form a new, larger municipality called Crans-Montana.

History of Mollens

Mollens has a long history! It was first written about around the year 1250, when it was called Molaen. Later, in 1286, people referred to it as Moleing. The town was once known by its German name, Molei, but this name is no longer used today.

Geography and Landscape

Mollens covered an area of about 32.5 square kilometers (12.5 square miles). A big part of this land, about 26.4%, was used for farming. Forests covered another large portion, about 32.1% of the area. About 3.1% of the land was built up with buildings and roads.

The town was located in the Sierre district, on the right side of the Rhone river. Mollens stretched from a height of about 900 meters (2,953 feet) up to 3,177 meters (10,423 feet) above sea level. It included the main villages of Mollens and Cordona. There were also smaller groups of houses like Conzor, Laques, and Saint-Maurice-de-Laques. Plus, it had the popular resort village of Aminona.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms for Mollens had a special design. It showed a silver mill-wheel on a red background. In the top right corner, there was a golden sun shining brightly. In the top left corner, there was a golden grape with a green leaf.

Population and People

In 2015, Mollens had a population of 269 people. Over the ten years from 2000 to 2010, the population grew by about 27.4%. Most of this growth was because people moved into the area.

In 2000, most people in Mollens, about 77%, spoke French as their main language. The second most common language was German, spoken by about 13.2% of the population. Italian was the third most common, spoken by about 3.4%.

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males and females. About 21.6% of the population were children and teenagers (0–19 years old). Adults (20–64 years old) made up the largest group at 61.7%. Seniors (over 64 years old) made up about 16.8% of the population.

Important Heritage Sites

The Fairy Rock, known as Rocher des Fées in French, is a very important historical site in Mollens. It is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance. This means it is a protected place because of its cultural importance.

Economy and Jobs

In 2010, the unemployment rate in Mollens was 4.8%. This means a small number of people who wanted to work couldn't find jobs.
