Monkton Nature Reserve: A Natural Gem

Monkton is home to the Monkton Nature Reserve. This special place is managed by the Thanet Countryside Trust, an environmental charity. The reserve is located on chalk hills just north of the village.

It covers about 16 acres (around 65,000 square meters). This area used to be an old chalk quarry, but nature has taken it back. The reserve is important for its interesting geology (the study of Earth's rocks and soil). It also has many important natural habitats, including a pond and rare types of orchids.

The reserve also features the Thanet Astronomical Observatory. This is a place where people can look at stars and planets. It also has the first artificial bat cave ever built in the UK, providing a safe home for bats. Visitors can use the field centre, which has a museum, a library for research, a bookshop, and a picnic area.

The Anglican parish church in Monkton is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. It is a very old church, dating back to the 12th century. Much of the church was rebuilt during the 15th century.

During this rebuilding, the north porch was added. The tower was also made taller, reaching its current height. The north aisle, which is a side section of the church, was closed off. New windows were also put in.

A church on this site was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a famous survey of England completed in 1086. The St Mary Magdalene church is the smallest of the seven very old churches that still remain in the Thanet area. The roof of the church also dates back to the 15th century. Stone walls surround the churchyard, with several gates for people to enter.
