Moreland is a small town in Coweta County, Georgia, in the United States. In 2020, about 382 people lived there. It is known as the birthplace of famous author Erskine Caldwell and where newspaper writer Lewis Grizzard grew up.
History of Moreland
The town of Moreland started as a community around the Mt. Zion Methodist Church. This church was built in 1843 for farmers who had moved to the area. Many of these farmers came through the Georgia Land Lottery of 1827.
When the Atlanta and West Point Railroad arrived in 1852, the community center moved south. This new spot was called Puckett Station. It was a place where trains could stop for wood and water.
The building of a train station in 1888 was a big moment for the town. The community was renamed Moreland on September 1, 1888. It officially became a town on December 28, 1888. The town was planned with the train station at its center. Its borders reached half a mile in every direction, making it a circular shape.
In Moreland's early days, cotton was very important to the local economy. Fruit crops like peaches, plums, pears, and grapes were also grown. However, things changed in the 1920s. The cotton crops were ruined by the boll weevil, a tiny beetle. Diseases and bad weather also destroyed the peach farms.
W.A. Brannon opened a store in 1894 and later started other businesses. He faced tough economic times and had to sell his buildings in 1920. The Moreland Hosiery Mill then used these buildings for several years. In 1926, new investors bought the property and opened Moreland Knitting Mills. This factory was the town's main employer until it closed in 1968.
Eventually, these buildings were given to the town of Moreland. Today, they are used for town offices, public meeting spaces, and the Hometown Heritage Museum. Items that were once shown in the Lewis Grizzard Museum were moved to the historic Moreland Mill in 2011.
