A Look Back in Time
The spot where Mount Calvary now stands was chosen by a missionary named Casper Rehrl. He picked a large hill because it had an amazing view. He placed a wooden cross there.
Around 1846, people started building homes at the bottom of this hill. Rehrl held the first church service in the community around 1849. It took place in the home of John Dietzen.
A church group was officially started in Mount Calvary by Rehrl on February 2, 1849. Building the church began the very next day. A school was also started by the church. It quickly had five or six students.
The village's first general store was built between 1851 and 1852. Two priests arrived on October 15, 1856. They came to start a monastery, which is a place where monks live and work. This monastery later became the St. Lawrence Seminary High School.
A post office was built in November 1877. Anthony Rothgery was the first person in charge of it. A railroad was built in the 1850s and 1860s. It connected the cities of Sheboygan and Fond du Lac. Trains traveled twice a day through a nearby stop called Calvary Station.
