History of the Mount Irish Range
Mining for Silver
In the 1860s and 1870s, people mined for silver on the east side of Mount Irish. This mining happened along Silver Canyon, just north of a place that is now a ghost town called Logan.
Old Towns and Communities
The ghost town of Crystal Springs also grew during this time. It is about 7 miles (11 km) east of the range. Crystal Springs is located where US Route 93, Nevada Route 318, and Nevada Route 375 meet.
The community of Hiko is five miles north of Crystal Springs on Route 318. Route 375 crosses the very southern part of the mountain range at Hancock Summit.
Mount Irish Wilderness Area
The Mount Irish Wilderness is a special protected area. It is located south of Mount Irish and covers 28,274 acres of the mountain range. The U.S. Congress officially set aside this area in 2004.
The Bureau of Land Management helps to take care of this wilderness. The land here ranges in height from 4,800 feet (1,463 meters) to 7,504 feet (2,287 meters). This protection helps keep the natural environment safe.
Mount Irish Archaeological District
The Mount Irish Archaeological District is a place where scientists study old human history. It includes four important sites. These sites are found on Logan Canyon Road. They are just east of the old Logan townsite. They are also just north of the Mount Irish Wilderness Area.
