Mount Perren is a cool mountain located right on the border between two Canadian provinces: Alberta and British Columbia. It sits on something called the Continental Divide, which is like a giant natural line that separates which way rivers flow across North America.

This mountain got its name in 1968. It was named after Walter Perren, who was a Swiss mountain guide and also worked as a warden for Parks Canada. Mount Perren is a big part of the amazing view you see when you visit Moraine Lake in the famous Valley of the Ten Peaks. This beautiful area is inside Banff National Park.

How Mount Perren Was Formed

The mountains you see in Banff National Park, including Mount Perren, are made of a type of rock called sedimentary rock. This rock formed a very, very long time ago, between 541 million and 66 million years ago!

Imagine shallow seas covering this area. Over millions of years, tiny bits of sand, mud, and shells settled at the bottom of these seas. These layers piled up and eventually hardened into sedimentary rock.

Later, a huge event called the Laramide orogeny happened. This was when massive forces deep within the Earth pushed and folded these rock layers. It was like a giant slow-motion collision that lifted the land, creating the tall mountains we see today. The older rock layers were even pushed over the top of younger ones!

What's the Climate Like?

The weather around Mount Perren is known as a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold winters with lots of snow, and summers that are usually mild, not too hot.

During the winter, temperatures can often drop below -20 degrees Celsius. When you add in the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 degrees Celsius! So, if you ever visit in winter, you'll need to bundle up!
