Mount Vernon is a city in Montgomery County, Georgia, United States. It's also the county seat, which means it's where the county government is located. In 2020, about 1,900 people lived here. The city is home to Brewton–Parker College.

History of Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon was started in 1797. It became the main town for Montgomery County in 1813. Before that, the county seat was on Arthur Lott's plantation. Mount Vernon officially became a town in 1872 and then a city in 1960. The city gets its name from Mount Vernon, which was the home of George Washington.
Geography and Location
Mount Vernon is on the western side of Montgomery County. It's located on high ground about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of the Oconee River. This river forms the border with Wheeler County. The city of Ailey is right next to Mount Vernon on its eastern side.
Roads and Travel
Two major roads, U.S. Routes 221 and 280, meet just north of the city center.
- US 221 goes north about 14 miles (23 km) to Soperton. It goes south about 25 miles (40 km) to Hazlehurst.
- US 280 goes east about 11 miles (18 km) to Vidalia. It goes west about 21 miles (34 km) to McRae–Helena.
Mount Vernon covers a total area of about 4.2 square miles (10.9 square kilometers). Only a very small part of this area, about 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometers), is water.

Brewton–Parker College is a private Christian college. Its main campus is located right here in Mount Vernon.
Local Schools
The Montgomery County School District manages all the public schools in the area. It includes schools for students from pre-school all the way to twelfth grade. The district has about 83 full-time teachers and teaches over 1,294 students.
