Where is Mount Vernon?
Mount Vernon is located in the northeast part of Mobile County. It's about 30 miles south of Mobile and 36 miles north of Jackson. U.S. Route 43 runs through the western side of the town.
The town covers about 5.6 square miles. A small part of this area, about 0.1 square miles, is water. Cedar Creek, which flows into the Mobile River, goes through the southern part of Mount Vernon. The Mobile River itself is only about 2 miles to the east.

In 2020, Mount Vernon had 1,354 residents. Most of the people living in the town were Black or African American (about 74%). White people made up about 21% of the population. There were also smaller groups of Native Americans and people of mixed races.

Back in 2010, there were 1,574 people living in Mount Vernon. The racial makeup was similar to 2020, with about 73.6% Black or African American residents and 23.4% White residents. The average age of people in Mount Vernon was about 42.3 years old.
Schools in Mount Vernon
Students in Mount Vernon attend schools run by the Mobile County Public School System. Younger students (Kindergarten through 8th grade) go to North Mobile County K-8, which is near Axis. For high school, students go to Citronelle High School in Citronelle.
Mount Vernon used to have its own public school called E.T. Belsaw/Mt. Vernon School. It taught students from Kindergarten to 8th grade. However, the school closed in 2016. This happened because the number of students dropped a lot, partly because some after-school programs were stopped.

Mount Vernon has some interesting history.
- Searcy Hospital: This used to be a large psychiatric hospital. Before it was a hospital, it was the Mount Vernon Arsenal, a place where weapons were stored. The hospital closed in 2012.
- Ellicott's Stone: About 6 miles south of town, you can find a special stone called "Ellicott's Stone." This stone was used a long time ago to mark land boundaries when surveying the area.

- John Kimbrough: He was a wide receiver in the National Football League, a professional American football league.
- William Trent Rossell: He was the Chief of Engineers for the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1913. He also served as an Engineer Commissioner for the District of Columbia.
