History of Mount Washington
Mount Washington started as a place where two important stagecoach routes crossed. Because of this, it was first called The Cross Roads.
How Mount Washington Got Its Name
In 1822, the town was officially named Mount Vernon. This name honored George Washington, the first United States president, and his home in Virginia. However, another town already had a post office with that name. So, in 1833, when the town officially became a city, its name was changed to "Mount Washington". This new name also honored President Washington.
At that time, about 700 people lived in Mount Washington. The town had three churches, two schools, six stores, five doctors, and two taverns. It was a busy place with many different jobs.
Growth and Challenges
By the 1850s, Mount Washington was the main economic center of Bullitt County. During the American Civil War in 1862, Confederate soldiers were in the town. They had a small fight with Union soldiers nearby. After a defeat, the Confederate soldiers left the area.
For many years, there was a two-room school building in town. In 1916, a new school with four classrooms was built. Today, Mount Washington Middle School stands where that four-room building once was. This middle school was built in the early 1940s and was once the high school. The middle school grew a lot and was expanded in 1995. Another middle school was built in 2006 to help with the growing number of students.
Over time, the town's businesses changed. By the 1930s, Mount Washington was no longer the biggest town in the county. A big fire in 1940 also damaged many businesses. But in the late 1960s, the town started to grow again. This happened when General Electric opened a large appliance factory nearby in Louisville. The number of people living in Mount Washington grew from 2,020 in 1970 to over 9,000 by 2010. Even though the factory changed owners, Mount Washington is still a popular place for people who work in Louisville to live.
A former mayor of Mount Washington once appeared on the TV game show The Price Is Right. He won some money and even gave the host, Bob Barker, a special key to the city.
