Muggio was once a small town, or municipality, in the Mendrisio area of Ticino, a canton in Switzerland. On October 25, 2009, Muggio joined with several other towns. These towns were Bruzella, Cabbio, Caneggio, Morbio Superiore, and Sagno. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality called Breggia.

The History of Muggio
Muggio is a very old place. It was first written about in the year 852. Back then, it was called Mugio.
Early Life in Muggio
People have lived in the valley where Muggio is located for a very long time. By the 800s, farmers had already settled in the village. In 1299, Muggio was listed as land owned by the Como Cathedral. At that time, it was part of the larger church area of Cabbio. In 1673, Muggio got its own smaller church area, called a vice-parish. This area was supported by the main church in Balerna until the 1800s.
The Church of San Lorenzo
The Church of San Lorenzo in Muggio was first mentioned in 1578. It was rebuilt in 1760. The church has been repaired and updated many times since then. The most recent work was done in 2003 and 2004.

For many years, the people of Muggio made a living from farming and raising animals. Many people also left Muggio to work in other countries. Some of these people were artists. Between 1850 and 1940, many people moved away from Muggio. Since the 1950s, the number of people living in Muggio has continued to get smaller.

It also has two smaller villages, called hamlets, named Scudellate and Roncapiano. Muggio is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Lugano. It is also very close to the border with Italy, about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away.
Muggio's Coat of Arms
The blazon (description) of Muggio's coat of arms is quite interesting. It shows a silver shield with a wavy silver stripe across the middle. Above the stripe, there is a golden corn cob with green leaves. Below the stripe, there is a bunch of golden grapes with green leaves. The wavy stripe stands for the river that flows through the valley. The corn cob and grapes show that farming was important to the people of Muggio.
