Murături facts for kids
Murături are a type of pickles from Romania and Moldova. The word "murături" means "pickles" in the Romanian language. These tasty treats are made by pickling vegetables or fruits in a salty water mix called brine. People often add special ingredients like dill, oak leaves, and celery to give them extra flavor and help keep them fresh for a long time.
Many different local vegetables are used to make murături. These include beetroot, cucumbers, green tomatoes (which are called gogonele in Romanian), carrots, cabbage, bell peppers, watermelons, mushrooms, turnips, celery, and cauliflower.
After the vegetables sit in the brine for a while, a process called fermentation happens. This makes the pickle juice become sour. Sometimes, this sour juice is used to add a tangy flavor to soups, like a traditional soup called borsch.
