Vada's Life Changes
The story of My Girl 2 takes place in the spring of 1974. This is almost two years after the first movie. Vada Sultenfuss is now a teenager. She is no longer the young girl who worried about getting sick all the time. Instead, she is more serious and wants to be independent.
Her father, Harry, and his new wife, Shelly DeVoto, are expecting a baby. They still live in the Sultenfuss funeral home in Madison, Pennsylvania. Harry's brother, Phil, has moved to Los Angeles and works as a mechanic there. Vada's grandmother, Gramoo, has also passed away. Vada still wears her mood ring. It reminds her of her best friend, Thomas J., who died from a very bad allergic reaction to bee stings while getting the ring for her.
To make space for the new baby, Vada moves out of her room. She moves into Gramoo's old room. This change makes her feel a bit unsettled. She even jokes about getting her own apartment.
A School Project and a Trip
Vada gets a school assignment. She needs to write an essay about someone she looks up to but has never met. She decides to write about her mother. However, Vada doesn't have much information about her mom. Her father, Harry, tries to help. But he was married to Vada's mother for less than a year before she died. So, he doesn't know much either.
Shelly, Vada's stepmother, really wants to help Vada remember her mom. Vada shares the few things she has about her mother. These include play programs, a passport, and a mysterious paper bag with a date on it. Vada mentions that she wants to travel someday. Shelly notices from her mom's passport that she was from Los Angeles. She suggests Vada visit her Uncle Phil in Los Angeles during spring break. This way, Vada can research her mother.
Harry first says no, thinking Vada is too young. But he eventually agrees. Vada gets ready for her trip to Los Angeles.
Adventures in Los Angeles
When Vada arrives in Los Angeles, a boy her age named Nick picks her up at the airport. Nick is the son of Rose, Phil's girlfriend. Rose owns the car repair shop where Phil works. Nick is not happy about giving up his spring break. But he agrees to help Vada find out more about her mother.
Their search hits a snag when they learn her mother's old high school burned down. But Vada and Nick still manage to find a yearbook from the year her mother attended.
Vada and Nick meet several people who knew her mother. Some of the things Vada learns surprise her. For example, her mother was suspended from school for smoking. Two people look at the paper bag from Vada's box of memories. Neither can figure out what the date means.
Then, someone mentions the name Jeffrey Pommeroy. Vada learns that her mother was married to him just before she met Harry. Vada gets upset. She worries that Jeffrey might be her real father instead of Harry. She wonders why her father never told her about him.
Meeting Jeffrey and Finding Answers
Even though she's nervous, Vada decides to meet Jeffrey, her mother's first husband. Jeffrey gives Vada lots of helpful information for her essay. He even shows her home movies of her mother. Vada is very touched watching her mother act and sing a song called "Smile". Jeffrey also explains the meaning of the date written on the paper bag.
Meanwhile, Uncle Phil is trying to show Rose how much he loves her. Another man keeps coming to the repair shop and complimenting Rose. Phil finally gathers the courage to show Rose how he feels. He proposes to her!
As Vada gets ready to fly home, she and Nick share a goodbye kiss at the airport. On the plane, Vada finds earrings Nick put in her backpack. They are for her newly pierced ears.
Back Home and New Beginnings
When Vada gets home, she finds out Shelly has just had a baby boy! Vada rushes to the hospital to see her new baby brother. He is crying, so Vada sings "Smile" to him while holding him. This calms him down.
Vada's essay about her mother gets an A+! She hopes to share everything she learned during her trip with her new brother someday.

A Planned Sequel That Didn't Happen
For many years, there was talk of a third movie in the My Girl series, possibly called Still My Girl. Columbia Pictures was interested in making it. In 2003, Dan Aykroyd said in an interview that Columbia wanted to make the movie. He also said they really wanted Anna Chlumsky to play Vada again.
Even in 2009, both Chlumsky and Aykroyd were still connected to the project. But as time went on, it became less likely that the movie would ever be made. In April 2012, Anna Chlumsky finally said that there were no plans for such a film.
