Naruto (鳴門市, Naruto-shi) is a city located in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. It is on the island of Shikoku. As of June 30, 2022, about 54,989 people lived in Naruto. The city covers an area of 191.11 square kilometers (73.79 sq mi). Naruto is famous for its amazing whirlpools.

Naruto is found at the very northeast tip of Tokushima Prefecture. It sits on the island of Shikoku. To the north, it touches the Seto Inland Sea. To the east, it faces the Kii Channel.

Naruto has a climate with warm summers and cool winters. There is usually little to no snow. The average temperature each year is about 16.2 °C (61.2 °F). September is the wettest month, with about 1637 mm (64.4 in) of rain. August is the warmest month, averaging 26.7 °C (80.1 °F). January is the coldest, at about 6.3 °C (43.3 °F). Because it is near the Seto Inland Sea, Naruto gets less rain than other parts of Tokushima.

Naruto's Past: A Brief History

The area where Naruto is now was once part of an old province called Awa Province. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Hachisuka clan ruled this area from Tokushima Castle.

The modern city of Naruto was formed in stages. On October 1, 1889, several villages were created. These included Seto, Naruto, Muya, and Satoura. Later, these villages became towns. Finally, on March 15, 1947, these four towns merged. They formed the city of Narunan. Just two months later, on May 15, 1947, the city was renamed Naruto.

Naruto's Economy and Jobs

Naruto has a mix of different ways people make a living. Many people work in farming and commercial fishing. There are also jobs in food processing and making medicines. In the past, making salt was a very important industry here. Two big companies, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group and Naruto Salt Industry, started in Naruto. They still have many facilities in the city today.

Naruto has many schools for young people. The city government runs 13 public elementary schools and five public middle schools. The Tokushima Prefectural Department of Education operates two public high schools. For those who want to study further, the Naruto University of Education is also located in the city.
