Even though it's not a city, it's recognized as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area the government counts for population statistics. In 2020, about 1,942 people lived there. This was an increase from 1,645 people in 2010.

Where is Navajo, New Mexico?

Navajo is in the northwestern part of McKinley County. It sits on the east side of the Black Creek valley. The community's southwestern edge is next to Apache County, Arizona.

Two main roads, Navajo Routes 12 and 31, help people get around. Route 12 goes south to Fort Defiance, Arizona (about 12 miles away). It also goes north to New Mexico State Road 134 in Crystal (about 6 miles away). Route 31 heads east into the Chuska Mountains.

The Navajo CDP covers about 2.25 square miles (5.83 square kilometers) of land. There's no water area within its borders. Black Creek flows along the western side of the community. This creek eventually joins the Puerco River, which is part of the Little Colorado River system.
