Navajo (which is called Niʼiijíhí in the Navajo language) is a small community in New Mexico, United States. It's located in McKinley County and is part of the Navajo Nation.
Even though it's not a city, it's recognized as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area the government counts for population statistics. In 2020, about 1,942 people lived there. This was an increase from 1,645 people in 2010.

Navajo is in the northwestern part of McKinley County. It sits on the east side of the Black Creek valley. The community's southwestern edge is next to Apache County, Arizona.
Two main roads, Navajo Routes 12 and 31, help people get around. Route 12 goes south to Fort Defiance, Arizona (about 12 miles away). It also goes north to New Mexico State Road 134 in Crystal (about 6 miles away). Route 31 heads east into the Chuska Mountains.
The Navajo CDP covers about 2.25 square miles (5.83 square kilometers) of land. There's no water area within its borders. Black Creek flows along the western side of the community. This creek eventually joins the Puerco River, which is part of the Little Colorado River system.
Just north of Navajo, you can find Red Lake.

In 2000, there were 2,097 people living in Navajo. Most people in the community are Native Americans, especially from the Navajo tribe.
In 2000, many people in Navajo spoke the Navajo language at home. About 64% of households used Navajo. The rest, about 36%, spoke English at home. Some people who spoke English did not speak it very well.
Families and Age Groups
In 2000, there were 475 households in Navajo. Many households (68%) had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about 4 to 5 people.
Navajo is a community with many young people. In 2000, over half of the population (51.9%) was under 18 years old. The average age was 17 years old.
Students in Navajo attend schools that are part of the Gallup-McKinley County Public Schools district.
The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) also runs a school nearby. It's called Crystal Boarding School. This school is for students from kindergarten to 6th grade. It's located in Crystal, but it has a Navajo address.
