Neche (/ˈnɪtʃiː/ NITCH-ee) is a small city in Pembina County, North Dakota, United States. It sits right on the banks of the Pembina River. In 2020, about 344 people lived there.

A Look Back in Time
Neche was officially started in 1882. People say its name comes from an Ojibwe word, nidji. This word means "friend," "neighbor," or "one like myself." From 1902 to 1906, a man named William L. Walton built cars right here in Neche!
Where is Neche?
According to the United States Census Bureau, Neche covers a total area of about 0.90 square kilometers (0.35 square miles). All of this area is land. Neche is located very close to the border between the United States and Canada. It's about one mile south of the border. On the Canadian side, you'll find the community of Gretna, Manitoba. Neche is also near the Neche–Gretna Border Crossing, which is a place where people can cross the border.
