History of Neptune Beach
Neptune Beach was once part of Jacksonville Beach. The northern part of Jacksonville Beach, where Neptune Beach is now, didn't have many people living there. A brick road called First Street connected this area to Atlantic Beach.
The name "Neptune Beach" came about in 1922. A resident named Dan G. Wheeler lived there and had to walk a long way home every evening after work. A friend who worked for the railroad told him that if he had his own train station, the train would stop for him. So, Wheeler built a small train station near his home and named it Neptune.
Neptune Beach became its own city in 1931. This happened after residents felt they were paying too much in taxes but weren't getting enough city services. Things like police, fire, garbage collection, and road work were not reaching their area well. The first mayor was O. O. McCollum. The city government first met in Wheeler's old train station. A new town hall was built in 1935.
