Nevado Tres Cruces Central is a very tall mountain in the Andes mountain range. It is located in the Atacama region of northern Chile. This mountain is actually an extinct volcano, meaning it won't erupt again.

About This Mountain

Nevado Tres Cruces Central is the second highest peak in the Tres Cruces group of mountains. It stands at an amazing 6,629 meters (about 21,749 feet) above sea level! It is also the tallest mountain that is completely inside Chile.

How Tall Is It?

Even though it's the second highest in its group, Nevado Tres Cruces Central is still very prominent. This means it rises high above the land around it. It is about 610 meters (2,000 feet) taller than the saddle (lowest point) connecting it to the main or south summit.

First Climbers

The first people known to climb Nevado Tres Cruces Central were Stefan Osiecki and Witold Paryski. They were from Poland and reached the top on February 26, 1937. Many climbers today try to climb both Nevado Tres Cruces Central and the south summit on the same trip. This is possible because a lower ridge connects them.

What Does It Look Like?

This mountain has a large crater at its top, which is about one kilometer (0.6 miles) wide. This crater is a reminder that it was once an active volcano.
