A Look Back in Time

First People of the Land

The land around the Hawkesbury River was originally home to the Dharug people. This area was very important to them. The nearby Nepean River and South Creek provided lots of food. The Dharug and Darkinjung people called the river Deerubbin. It was a key source of food and a way to travel.

Early European Settlement

In 1789, Governor Arthur Phillip explored this area. He was looking for good land for farming. He discovered and named the Hawkesbury River. European settlers started living here by 1794. The area was known for its rich farmland. It helped feed the new colony during difficult times. However, the river often flooded, which could ruin farmers' crops.

Governor Lachlan Macquarie became governor in 1810. Under his leadership, the colony grew stronger. He wanted to create a free community, not just a prison colony. He started many building projects. He built 265 public buildings and improved roads. The Hawkesbury area did very well under him.

In December 1810, Governor Macquarie visited the area. He named new towns. He called the town in the Green Hills area Windsor. The town in the Richmond district he named Richmond. These names reminded him of towns in England. Other towns like Castlereagh, Pitt Town, and Wilberforce were named after English leaders. These five towns are often called Macquarie's Five Towns. Windsor and Richmond became more permanent towns with streets and public buildings.

The New Inn Building

The New Inn building was designed to be safe from the Hawkesbury River's floods. It was built in several steps over time. We don't know exactly when it was first built. It started as a four-room house with a front porch. In the 1830s, three more rooms were added, along with a kitchen at the back.

From 1837 to 1839, the building was officially known as the "New Inn." Robert Potts was the person who ran it. After that, it was used as a shop and then as a private home.

In the 1980s, the New Inn was almost torn down. Luckily, it was saved! In 1995, it became part of a motel called the "New Inn Motel." Today, the old building is used as the manager's home for the motel.

What the Building Looks Like

The New Inn is an old building from the early 1800s. It is now used as the manager's home for the motel.

Why It's a Heritage Site

The New Inn at 49-51 Bosworth Street is a great example of the important buildings in Richmond from the 1830s. It shows how buildings were made better than the first simple homes in the town. It also has a strong connection to Isaac Cornwell, a successful local businessman.

The building shows the typical style, building methods, and materials used for houses in the 1830s and 1840s. It is also special because it uses a building method called "brick nog construction." Only a few examples of this method still exist today.

The New Inn helps us understand how building styles and methods have changed over time. It is a valuable part of history. The land where the house stands might also hold important clues about the past.

The New Inn was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.
