New Riegel is a small village located in Seneca County, Ohio, in the United States. In 2020, about 286 people called New Riegel home. It's a quiet community with a rich history.

History of New Riegel

Before 1850, New Riegel had different names. It was called Schindler, after a German immigrant named Anton Schindler. It was also known as Wolf's Creek. This name came from the many wolves that used to live in the local forests.

In 1850, Anton Schindler divided his land into 43 smaller pieces. He named this new area after his hometown, Riegel, Germany.

Early Community and Faith

Historically, many people who settled in New Riegel were Catholic immigrants from Germany. They created a special religious community. This community was named after Boniface, a famous missionary from the 700s. He helped spread Christianity in what is now Germany.

Other Catholic immigrants from Switzerland, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg also came to this community. Later, they started their own church communities in nearby places like Frenchtown and Alvada.

Religious Orders and Education

Starting in 1844, two religious groups helped the community for over 150 years. These were the Precious Blood Missionaries and the Precious Blood Sisters from Switzerland.

The Precious Blood Sisters began teaching the children of the village in 1845. They continued this important work for more than a century.

Important Buildings

The Saint Boniface Catholic Church was finished in 1878. Today, it is a chapel of All Saints Catholic Church. It is the tallest building in the village. Its design is similar to many churches built in rural northwest Ohio in the late 1800s.

For many years, a large building called Mary of the Crib Convent stood north of the church. This was where the Precious Blood Sisters lived. Sadly, it was destroyed by a fire on June 24, 2001.

Many of the nuns, priests, and brothers who served the community are buried at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery. This cemetery has over 2,750 marked graves. The priests lived in a red brick house called a rectory, built in 1904, south of the church.

An elementary school was built just south of the rectory in 1927. This school replaced an older one that was torn down that same year.

Public Education in New Riegel

Public education began in New Riegel in 1876. For a long time, New Riegel Local Schools rented the church's elementary school. This continued until January 2003. At that time, a new school for all grades (Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade) was completed.

Before renting the church school, the public school system had a German school. This was located where the city hall is today. Later, a village jail was added to that site in 1883. Another brick schoolhouse was built in 1911, west of the American Legion hall.

Until the 1990s, children in New Riegel would go to the church facility at 8:00 a.m. for daily mass or religious education. Then, public school classes would start at 8:30 a.m. in the same building.
