New York Mills is a small village located in Oneida County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 3,244 people lived there. This village is special because it's partly in the town of Whitestown and partly in the town of New Hartford. It's also a western suburb of the bigger city of Utica.

Village History and Growth

New York Mills got its name from four important textile mills. These mills started around 1808 and were a big part of the village's economy. They finally closed in the 1950s. One of these mills, the Middle Mill Historic District, was even added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 because of its historical importance.

How the Village Began

After the American Revolutionary War, which ended in 1783, the area became part of the town of Whitestown. People started settling in the area that would become New York Mills around 1902. Early settlers built a school and created a school district for their children.

The Famous Mills

The first mill opened in 1808. Then, in 1810, the "Oneida Manufacturing Society" mill was built. The "Whitestown Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Society" mill started in 1813 and began working in 1827. The Burr Stone Mill was built in 1870. It was a very large building, 250 feet long and 70 feet wide, with four and a half stories. The first floor was for weaving, and the other floors were for preparing the threads. The last of the four main mills began operating in 1902.

These mills made New York Mills a busy industrial area. The village was close to important rivers like the Mohawk River, which helped with transportation and power.

Changes Over Time

In 1909, the New York Mills Corporation's mills faced financial trouble and were bought by the Augustus D. Juilliard Company. This company later sold the mills again in 1953.

Another important mill, the Walcott & Campbell Spinning Mill, opened in 1902. It was built near Sadaquada Creek to use the water for power. After this mill closed, its building was split into two parts, used by different companies.

A Welcoming Community

From as early as 1878, many immigrants came to New York Mills. Polish immigrants, for example, settled here looking for jobs and a new home. The village has always been fairly small, located between the larger villages of New Hartford and Whitesboro. It also borders the village of Yorkville. Over the years, New York Mills has improved its roads and updated old buildings, growing into a stable and successful community.
