A Look Back in Time

Newbrough Town Hall

Newbrough has a very old past. It was once home to a Roman fort. This fort was part of the original northern border of the Roman Empire. It was built in 71 AD along the Stanegate road. Today, Newbrough's church stands right where that Roman fort used to be.

The village was also part of a larger area called the Manor of Thornton a long time ago. There was a medieval building called Thornton Tower. By 1541, it was already falling apart. Now, this old tower is completely ruined. It is still listed as a Grade II historic building.

How Newbrough is Governed

Newbrough is part of the Hexham area. This area elects a Member of Parliament (MP) to represent its people. The MP goes to the UK Parliament in London. They help make decisions for the country.

Important Buildings and Places

Newbrough has several interesting landmarks. These buildings tell stories about the village's past.

Newbrough Hall

Newbrough Hall is a large country house in Newbrough. It was built in the early 1800s. This beautiful building is listed as a Grade II* historic building. This means it's very important!

The land where the hall stands has been owned by different families. In 1692, John Armstrong owned it. Later, in the early 1700s, John Bacon took over. In 1811, the property went to Bacon's great-grandson, Henry Wastell.

Mr. Wastell decided to build a new house in 1812. It was designed by a famous architect named John Dobson. The house was built next to an older tower. Later, in 1901, the estate went to Wastell's daughter and her husband, Colonel Coulson. They hired architect Francis William Deas to update the house in 1902.

The updated house had two floors and five sections. The middle section had a special triangular shape called a pediment. Two wings were added to the back. These wings connected to an old coach house from 1813. This created a courtyard in the middle. The house even had electricity, which was very modern for the time! A separate building was built to generate the power. This old powerhouse is now a separate home and is also a Grade II listed building.

Newbrough Town Hall

The Newbrough Town Hall is a very important building for the community. Many people think it's one of the best town halls in the Tynedale area. It was finished in 1878. The hall was completely updated in 1998. It's a busy place for local events.

Women's Institute Building

The Women's Institute building has an interesting history. It was first built in 1854 as the Mechanics Institute. This was a place where people could learn and read. It is a Grade II listed building.

In 1948, the building was given to the Newbrough Women's Institute (WI). The WI is a group for women that started in 1923. It's still active today! In 2000, the WI gave the building to the Town Hall. The group now meets at the Town Hall, just like they did before 1948.

On November 9, 2015, the first WI meeting in England turned 100 years old. To celebrate, the building's history was updated. It now officially includes its connection to the Women's Institute.

Meggie's Dene

About a mile north of the village, there's a small stream called Meggie's Dene. Local stories say that a 16th-century witch named Old Meg is buried there. People say her grave is marked by a pink thorn tree.
