Newman is a city in Stanislaus County, California. It is located in the San Joaquin Valley, which is part of the larger Central Valley. In 2020, about 12,351 people lived there.

The city was started in 1888 by a man named Simon Newman. It is mostly a farming community. Newman is also known for its fun annual Fall Festival.

Simon Newman was born in 1846 in a place called Willmars, in Bavaria, which is now part of Germany. When he was 16, in 1862, Simon decided to move to California. His sister, Fanny Wangenheim, was already living there.

When Simon first arrived, he only spoke German and Hebrew. But he quickly learned English. He even changed his family name from Neumann to Newman. Simon became a very successful businessman. Because of his success, he was able to found the town of Newman in 1888.

Newman is found along California State Route 33. This road connects it to nearby towns like Gustine and Crows Landing. A major highway, Interstate 5, is just a few miles west of the city.
