Nick Mira's Early Life and Musical Journey
When Nick Mira was a child, he enjoyed playing the guitar. Later, he learned to play the piano. He started focusing on making music at just 13 years old. He looks up to famous artist Pharrell Williams as a big inspiration.
Nick describes his music style as "melodic," meaning it has nice tunes, and "ambient," which means it creates a certain mood or atmosphere. He finished high school at James River High School in 2019. At first, Nick wanted to become a producer by selling his musical creations, called "beats," as if they were complete songs. However, he realized he needed to learn more about how to sell music effectively.
Nick Mira's Career in Music Production
Forming Internet Money Records
In 2016, Nick Mira met other producers, Taz Taylor and DT, online through a Twitch stream. They became friends because they all shared a similar way of selling and sharing their music beats on platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud. These three decided to work together and formed a music group called Internet Money. Their goal is to help new and less known music producers get noticed and connect them with other artists to create amazing music.
Nick started his career by selling beats online. Over time, his approach changed. He found that creating a fun and positive atmosphere makes music creation less stressful and more enjoyable.
First Big Hits and Collaborations
In 2017, Nick, Taz Taylor, and Dex Duncan achieved their first big success. They produced a song for the artist XXXTentacion, which featured Trippie Redd. This song reached number 41 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It later climbed to number 28. By March 29, 2019, it became the most streamed song on SoundCloud, with over 206 million listens.
Nick started working with rapper Jarad Higgins, known as Juice Wrld, in 2016. They met through a friend and producer named Sidepce (also known as DT). Nick remembered that Juice Wrld only had about 300 followers on SoundCloud back then. Nick sent many beats to Juice Wrld online. He earned production credits on several songs from Juice Wrld's 2018 debut album, Goodbye & Good Riddance. These songs included "All Girls Are the Same," "Lucid Dreams," "Lean wit Me," "I'm Still," "Candles," "Used To," "Hurt Me," "End Of the Road," and "I'll Be Fine." "Lucid Dreams" became a massive hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has sold over 14 million copies globally and is recognized as 12-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
There was a discussion about whether Nick had copied the song "Lean wit Me," performed by Juice Wrld. Nick denied this and later showed everyone how he created the song from scratch in a video on YouTube, released by Internet Money. He explained, "I created Juice Wrld's 'Lean Wit Me' beat completely by myself. I played the guitar live for the beat, programmed the drums, and then sent it to Juice to record his vocals and make the song, just like our usual process."
In April 2018, Nick and Taz Taylor signed a special agreement for Internet Money with Alamo and Interscope Records. This deal helped their music reach even more listeners.
Continued Success and Chart-Topping Albums
Nick and Juice Wrld continued their successful partnership on the 2019 album Death Race for Love. After their first album's success, Nick kept making and sending many beats to Juice Wrld. They estimated they had over 100 songs that hadn't been released yet by 2019. Nick felt that Death Race for Love showed how much both he and Juice Wrld had grown as artists. He believed their sound improved because of their experience working together. He also mentioned that hardcore rock bands influenced the album's unique sound.
Death Race For Love was released on March 8, 2019. Nick produced four songs on it, including the popular tracks "Empty" and "Robbery." The album quickly went to number one on the Billboard 200 chart on March 14, 2019. It sold 165,000 album-equivalent units in its first week. Also in 2019, Nick and Taz Taylor produced Lil Tecca's song "Ransom." This song reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Later that year, he collaborated with Post Malone on the song "On the Road." This track, featuring Meek Mill and Lil Baby, was on Post Malone's 2019 album Hollywood's Bleeding and peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2020, Nick produced several songs for Juice Wrld's album Legends Never Die. This album was released after Juice Wrld's passing. Nick produced tracks like "Smile" with The Weeknd, and "Tell Me U Luv Me", which was added to the album in August 2020. Nick also produced songs for other artists. One big hit was "Lemonade," a collaboration with Gunna, Don Toliver, and Nav, released through Internet Money. This song became a global sensation, reaching number one in the United Kingdom and the top ten on the US Hot 100 chart.
Later in 2020, Nick helped produce 10 songs on the Internet Money album B4 the Storm. This album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. The album featured artists like Lil Tecca, TyFontaine, and 24kGoldn, whom Nick has continued to work with.
Nick Mira's Musical Style and Influences
While Nick Mira is mostly known for creating hip-hop beats, he has also explored other music styles. For example, he produced songs on Machine Gun Kelly's pop-punk album, Tickets to My Downfall. He describes his production style as "melodic" (full of tunes), "dynamic" (energetic and changing), and "spacious" (creating a wide sound).
Nick gets inspiration from artists like Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Metro Boomin, Lex Luger, and Sonny Digital. These artists have all greatly influenced how hip-hop music is made.
Influence on Music Production
Nick Mira and other Internet Money members are known for helping popularize "type beats." These are instrumental tracks designed to sound like a specific famous artist's style, helping them get more attention. Some people have discussed Internet Money's marketing approach. However, Nick explains that he focuses on making music he loves. He uses the "type beat" idea to suggest artists who would sound great on his instrumental tracks.
Since Nick started producing music when he was young, he understands why music software, called Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), is popular with young people. He even said, "producing is the new video game." Nick believes it's important to work with new and rising artists. This helps them build their fan base and grow alongside the Internet Money label. He also thinks that working with artists in a studio, rather than just online, is very valuable. This is true no matter how famous or successful the artist is.
