A Look Back at Niland's History

Niland has an interesting past with several name changes! The first post office in the area was called Old Beach. It operated from 1905 to 1907.

Later, in 1910, a new post office opened with the name Imperial Junction. This name changed to Hobgood in 1913. The name Hobgood was chosen to honor a local pioneer named Richard H. Hobgood.

Finally, in 1914, the name changed one last time to Niland. This name was created by the Imperial Farm Lands Association. They combined "Nile Land" to suggest that the area was very fertile, like the land around the Nile River.

From 1904 to 1960, Niland was an important stop for trains. It was the northern end of the Inter-California Railway.

Life in the Niland Community

Visitors to Niland have described it as a unique place. In 2018, one visitor noted its "quirky decorations" and "graffiti."

Despite its unusual look, Niland offers some basic services. You can find places like motels, RV parks, and laundromats there. There is also a diner for people to eat.
