Early Life
Nina Marker was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She found school challenging. When she was 15 years old, she got help for feeling sad and was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. This is a type of autism, which means her brain works in a unique way.
Modeling Career
Nina was discovered while riding the subway to McDonald's. In 2014, she won the Copenhagen part of the Elite Model Look competition. Her big break came when she walked the runway for Anthony Vaccarello's collection for Saint Laurent.
Walking the Catwalk
Nina has appeared on fashion runways in New York, London, Paris, and Milan. She has modeled for many famous brands. These include Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Stella McCartney, and Versace.
Speaking Out About Autism
In September 2017, Nina was a top model at Milan Fashion Week. She gained international attention for an Instagram post. She shared a photo of herself wearing a t-shirt that said, "Bee Kind, I Have Autism".
In her message, she told her followers, "It's possible for us to be successful and have a good time...Stay safe and protect your mind." This post quickly became very popular online. Many families and friends of children with autism shared it. It also created a lot of discussion in the fashion world.
Advocacy and Awareness
After her viral post, Nina was featured in the American edition of Vogue magazine. Since then, she has regularly spoken about mental health. She shares her frustrations from school, saying it wasn't set up to help with her condition.
In 2021, she told Vogue Business that she often needs to remind people how her neurodivergence affects her at work. Fashion sets can have many bright lights and loud sounds. These can cause sensory overload for her. This is because some people think she is "normal" and doesn't have autism.
Nina works with her agents at The Society and Elite. They help her get breaks between jobs to relax. They also plan her travel to reduce stress and avoid things that might trigger her sensory issues. She also practices yoga to help her handle work pressures.
Vogue magazine named Nina a breakout model for the Spring 2018 season. They said she showed "confidence and attitude aplenty." They also noted that "by using her social media platforms to raise awareness about autism... Marker made her impact on and off the runway."
As of 2022, Nina Marker is on the Models.com Money List. This list includes models who work with many commercial clients.
