Stella McCartney's Early Life
Stella Nina McCartney was born in London, England, on September 13, 1971. She was named after her great-grandmothers, both named Stella. Growing up, Stella traveled a lot with her parents, Paul and Linda McCartney, and their band, Wings. She has an older half-sister, Heather, an older sister, Mary, and a younger brother, James. Her father shared that the band's name, Wings, was inspired by Stella's birth. He hoped she would arrive "on the wings of an angel" during a difficult delivery.
Even though her parents were famous, they wanted Stella and her siblings to have a normal childhood. They attended local public schools in East Sussex. Stella has mentioned that she faced some challenges with bullying during her school years.
Stella McCartney's Fashion Journey
Starting in Fashion
Stella McCartney showed an interest in designing clothes from a young age. When she was 13, she made her very first jacket. Later, at 16, she gained experience by working with famous designer Christian Lacroix. She also learned a lot from Edward Sexton, a tailor on Savile Row who worked for her father.
She studied fashion design at Ravensbourne University London and then at Central Saint Martins, graduating in 1995. For her final school fashion show, famous models like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss wore her designs. Her father, Paul McCartney, even wrote a special song called "Stella May Day" for the show!
Stella has always been a vegetarian and is a strong advocate for animal rights. This means her designs never use leather or fur. She often includes messages in her clothes, like an Adidas jacket that said "suitable for sporty vegetarians." Her commitment to using vegan-friendly materials is a big part of her brand.
Building a Fashion Empire
In 1997, Stella became the creative director for the fashion brand Chloé. She held this important role until 2001. That same year, she started her own fashion house, Stella McCartney, in partnership with the Gucci Group. She showed her first collection in Paris. Today, her brand has over 50 stores around the world, in cities like London, Paris, and New York.
Stella expanded her brand beyond clothes. In 2003, she launched her first perfume, Stella. She also created an organic skincare line called CARE in 2007. In 2008, she introduced a lingerie collection, and in 2010, she launched "Stella McCartney Kids" for babies and children up to 12 years old.
In 2012, Stella invited the Soul Rebels Brass Band to play at one of her fashion shows in New York. Many famous people attended, including Anne Hathaway and Jim Carrey. She also helped create The Sustainable Fashion Handbook that year. In 2016, she launched her first menswear collection, inspired by her father and comedian Jethro.
In 2018, Stella took full control of her company by buying back the shares from Kering. The next year, she partnered with LVMH. She designed the beautiful wedding reception dress for Meghan Markle. Later, she made replicas of this dress for her "Made With Love" collection.
Stella also cares about important causes. In 2018, she started the Stella McCartney Cares Foundation. This charity helps women who have had breast cancer, in memory of her mother, Linda. In 2021, she released a fashion collection inspired by The Beatles, called "The Beatles: Get Back." In 2023, she participated in the Coronation Concert for King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
In January 2025, Stella McCartney bought back the remaining shares of her company from LVMH. This made her fashion house fully independent again. She continues to advise LVMH on important sustainability topics.
Creative Collaborations
Stella McCartney has worked with many other brands and organizations. In 2004, she started a long-term partnership with Adidas. Together, they created a popular collection of sportswear for women. In 2010, she designed a jewelry line with Disney, inspired by the movie Alice in Wonderland.
Stella also works with groups like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to protect animals. She has spoken out against using real fur in uniforms. In 2018, she teamed up with the United Nations to create a plan for the fashion industry to become more sustainable and eco-friendly. In 2019, she partnered with singer Taylor Swift to create a fashion line called "Stella X Taylor Swift," inspired by Swift's album Lover.
Designing for Team GB
In 2010, Stella McCartney was chosen as the Creative Director for Team GB (Great Britain) for the 2012 Olympics. This was a big deal because it was the first time a top fashion designer created all the uniforms for a country's athletes in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The special Team GB outfits were shown to the public in 2012. Stella continued this important role for the 2016 Summer Olympics as well.
Stella McCartney's Family Life
Stella McCartney married British publisher Alasdhair Willis on August 30, 2003. Her wedding dress was a special design, inspired by the dress her mother wore. Stella and Alasdhair have four children together. Her children even appeared with her on the cover of Vogue magazine. Alasdhair Willis became the creative director of Adidas in March 2022.
Stella also has a younger half-sister, born in 2003. After her mother passed away in 1998, Stella found a way to cope with her feelings of loss. She shared that practicing transcendental meditation helped her greatly during a difficult time.
In 2023, Stella had plans to build a house in Scotland. This project received some feedback from the local community, especially regarding environmental concerns.
