Stella McCartney's Early Life
Stella Nina McCartney was born in London, England. She was named after her two great-grandmothers, both named Stella. Her mother, Linda, had Jewish family roots.
As a child, Stella traveled all over the world with her parents. They were part of their band called Wings. Stella traveled with her older half-sister Heather, older sister Mary, and younger brother James. Her father, Paul, once shared that the band's name, Wings, came from a prayer he made when Stella was born. He prayed she would be born "on the wings of an angel."
Even though her parents were famous, they wanted their children to have a normal life. Stella and her siblings went to local public schools in East Sussex. Stella has mentioned that she faced bullying at school.
Stella McCartney's Fashion Career
Starting in Fashion Design
Stella McCartney became interested in designing clothes when she was young. She designed her first jacket at age 13. When she was 16, she worked for the famous designer Christian Lacroix. She also learned a lot from Edward Sexton, who was her father's tailor.
Stella studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins and Ravensbourne University London. She graduated in 1995. For her graduation fashion show, her friends, who were also supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, modeled her designs for free. Her father even wrote a special song for the show called "Stella May Day."
Stella has always been a vegetarian. This means she never uses leather or fur in her designs. She is a strong supporter of animal rights. Some of her clothes even have messages about her "no animal" policy. For example, one of her Adidas jackets says "suitable for sporty vegetarians."
