Nord-Est (which means North East) is a special area in Romania. It's one of the country's main development regions. Sometimes, people call it Nord-Est Moldova because it's in the historical region of Moldavia.

What Counties Make Up Nord-Est?

How Does the Nord-Est Economy Work?
The main way people make a living in the Nord-Est region is through agriculture. This is especially true in the northern parts. However, there are also many cities with industries, like Iaşi, Bacău, and Suceava.
The region's average income per person (called GDP per capita) is the lowest in Romania. It's about two-thirds of the national average. Some people think that Botoşani and Vaslui are the poorest counties in Romania. But Iaşi, which is the biggest city in Nord-Est, is one of the richer cities in the region. The richest counties in the region, from most to least wealthy, are Iaşi, Bacău, Suceava, Neamţ, Vaslui, and Botoşani.
Who Lives in Nord-Est?
In 2011, about 3,371,909 people lived in the Nord-Est region. This makes it the region with the most people in all of Romania. The population density is about 91 people per square kilometer.
Most people in the region are Romanians, making up about 97.9% of the population. The second largest group is the Roma, who make up 1.2%. Other groups, like Ukrainians, make up the rest of the population (0.9%).
The most common language spoken is Romanian. About 98.7% of the people speak it as their first language. Some other traditional languages include Romany, spoken by 0.6% of the people, and Ukrainian, spoken by 0.3%.
