North Saint Paul (often shortened to North St. Paul) is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. It is located to the east-northeast of the city of Saint Paul. In 2020, about 12,364 people lived there.

North Saint Paul is its own city. It is not just a neighborhood of nearby Saint Paul. This means it's different from many suburbs. Instead of being full of new buildings, many structures in North Saint Paul are older. It even has a downtown area with brick shops.

On the east side of the Margaret Street bridge, you can find the huge 20-ton North Saint Paul Snowman. This snowman is the official symbol of the city. It was built between 1971 and 1974 by Lloyd Koesling. It moved to its current spot in 1990.

City Geography

North Saint Paul covers about 3.01 square miles (7.80 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. About 0.16 square miles (0.41 square kilometers) is water. The city has two main lakes: Silver Lake and Casey Lake. Both lakes have large parks next to them. These parks are great places to visit.

Getting Around North Saint Paul

Minnesota Highway 36 runs through North Saint Paul. This highway is a main road with four lanes. It has both intersections and overpasses. The Gateway State Trail also crosses the city. This trail follows an old railroad path. Interstate Highway 694 is also very close to the city.

North Saint Paul's History

North St. Paul was first called Castle. It was founded in 1887 by Henry Anson Castle. This happened when the Wisconsin Central Railroad reached this area.

North St. Paul is home to Neumann's Bar. This bar is the oldest one in Minnesota that has been open continuously. It first opened in 1887. It has served drinks ever since. Even during Prohibition, when alcohol was illegal, they found ways to stay open. They served "near beer" downstairs. They also had a secret speakeasy upstairs. Visitors can still see the special keyhole door used to check people. They can also see the old telephone that connected to the downstairs bar.

North Saint Paul has several churches. Christ Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). North Church is a Presbyterian church. St Mark's Lutheran Church was started in 1887. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

The Church of St Peter is a Catholic church. It also has a school. It is located on Margaret Street. The Catholic community in North St. Paul started in 1888. The first church building was bought in 1889. A new, historic brick church was built in 1915. The community moved into this church in 1916. They spent the next ten years decorating it. They added stained glass windows and marble altars. The current church building was started in 2007. It was officially opened in 2008.
