North Ward is a coastal suburb located in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It's part of the City of Townsville. In 2021, about 5,073 people lived here.

North Ward is one of the oldest parts of Townsville. It has grown a lot over many years. You can find some of Townsville's most popular spots here. These include The Strand, a fun waterpark, and a cool rockpool.

North Ward is famous for its beautiful beach area called The Strand. From here, you can see Magnetic Island across the water.

Most of North Ward is flat and close to sea level. However, there's a small hill called Stanton Hill in the south. It rises about 60 meters high.

At the very northern tip of North Ward, you'll find a point of land called Kissing Point. North Ward Road, also known as Warburton Street, runs through the suburb.

A Look at North Ward's History

North Ward is one of Townsville's oldest suburbs. Its history goes all the way back to the 1870s.

Many schools were started here a long time ago:

  • Townsville Central State School opened its doors on March 11, 1869.
  • St Joseph's Catholic Primary School began on March 29, 1873. It was started by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Later, the Sisters of Mercy took over the school in November 1878.
  • Townsville Grammar School welcomed its first students on April 16, 1888.
  • St Patrick's College was founded by the Sisters of Mercy on January 1, 1904.

The Townsville Golf Club, Queensland's oldest golf club, started at Kissing Point in 1893. It later moved to different locations.
