The Northern Province (Tamil: வட மாகாணம் Vaṭakku Mākāṇam; Sinhala: උතුරු පළාත Uturu Paḷāta) is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka. Its capital city is Jaffna. This province is home to most of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. A long conflict in Sri Lanka started here.

Provinces in Sri Lanka were first set up in the 1800s. Later, in 1987, Provincial councils were created. These councils were formed by a change to the country's Constitution. For a time, between 1988 and 2006, the Northern Province and the Eastern Province were joined together. They formed a single area called the North Eastern Province.

Districts of the Province

The Northern Province is divided into five smaller areas called districts. Each district has its own unique features and communities.
