History of the Church

A very long time ago, there was a smaller church on this spot. In 1829, an important meeting happened there. This meeting was called the First Constituent Assembly. At this assembly, leaders worked on creating the first rules for the country of Uruguay.

The church you see today was planned in 1861. It was built in 1890. Its style is called neoclassical, which means it looks like old Greek and Roman buildings. It has two tall bell towers on the front. On September 8, 1866, the bishop of Montevideo, Jacinto Vera, officially made it a parish church.

The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This is a very popular way to honor the Virgin Mary for many Catholic people.

In the 1930s, a new road called Diagonal Agraciada was being built. Because of this, the front of the church had to be taken down. It was rebuilt in 1935 by two architects, Elzeario Boix and Horacio Terra.
