The Church of Our Lady of the Mount Carmel (also known as Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Spanish) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Montevideo, Uruguay. Many people in the area call it the Iglesia de la Aguada. It is a special place of worship dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
History of the Church
A very long time ago, in 1829, a smaller church stood on this same spot. This earlier building was important because the First Constituent Assembly met there. This assembly helped create Uruguay's first constitution.
The church you see today was started in 1861. Its main construction was finished in 1890. It was built in a Neoclassical style, which means it looks like ancient Greek and Roman buildings. It had two tall bell towers on the front.
On September 8, 1866, the bishop of Montevideo, Jacinto Vera, officially made it a parish church. This meant it became a central place for the local Catholic community.
In the 1930s, a new road called the Diagonal Agraciada was being built. Because of this, the church's original front had to be taken down. It was then rebuilt in 1935 by architects Elzeario Boix and Horacio Terra. They made sure the new front still looked like the original neoclassical design.
