Where the Nulhegan River Flows

The Nulhegan River is made up of a main river and two important branches. These branches join the main river as it travels through different towns in Vermont.

The Main River

The main part of the Nulhegan River starts at Nulhegan Pond in the town of Brighton. From there, it flows east into Ferdinand. As it continues east, the North Branch of the Nulhegan joins it. The main river then goes into Brunswick before turning southeast. It finally reaches the Connecticut River in Bloomfield.

The North Branch

The North Branch of the Nulhegan River begins at a place called Unknown Pond in Averys Gore. It starts at a high point, about 2,326 feet (709 meters) above sea level. This branch flows southeast through Lewis and a small part of Brighton. It then meets the main Nulhegan River in Ferdinand. This branch is about 14.4 miles (23.2 kilometers) long.

The East Branch

The East Branch of the Nulhegan River starts in the middle of Averill. It first flows north and west for a short distance. Then, it turns south and southeast for most of its journey. This branch passes through a corner of the town of Lewis. Finally, it enters Bloomfield and joins the main Nulhegan River, about 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometers) before the main river reaches the Connecticut River. The East Branch is the longest branch, at about 16.5 miles (26.6 kilometers).
