Oakes is a city in Dickey County, North Dakota, United States. It is the largest city in the county. In 2020, about 1,798 people lived there. Oakes was started in 1886.

History of Oakes
Oakes was planned out in 1886. It was named after Thomas F. Oakes, who worked for the railroad. A post office opened in Oakes in 1886, and the city officially became a city in 1888.
Geography and Location
Oakes is located about one mile east of the James River. Many train tracks meet in Oakes. Because of its easy access to trains, Oakes has several large grain elevators. These are tall buildings used to store a lot of grain, especially corn, before it is shipped out.
The United States Census Bureau says that Oakes covers about 1.56 square miles (4.05 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.

Parks in Oakes
J. Paul Klinger Park
This park is located southwest of the city pool. It has a covered area with seats and tables, perfect for picnics. Klinger Park also features a beach volleyball court and a playground. The playground has a slide, swings, a tire swing, tunnel tubes, a rock wall, and a rope wall for climbing.
Softball Complex
The Oakes softball complex has three softball fields. It also includes a playground, a two-hole Frisbee golf course, and a place to buy snacks and drinks.
