The Story of Ocean Ridge
The Town of Ocean Ridge was first established in 1931. It was originally called the Town of Boynton Beach. This area was once part of a larger town called Boynton.
Early Beginnings
Major Nathan S. Boynton visited the area in 1894. He later opened the Boynton Beach Hotel in 1897. The Town of Boynton officially became a town in 1920.
In 1925, a famous architect named Addison Mizner planned a huge hotel in Boynton. It was meant to have 2,000 rooms and cost millions of dollars. This hotel was going to be one of the biggest and most beautiful in South Florida. However, some local disagreements, along with hurricanes in 1926 and 1928, stopped this big dream.
A New Name for a New Town
In 1930, a large piece of land called "Mizner Mile" was sold. It became the private estate of Col. Robert R. McCormick, who published the Chicago Tribune newspaper. This was a very big land deal for Palm Beach County at the time.
In 1931, twelve homes decided to form their own town. They called it the "Town of Boynton Beach". This happened because of disagreements about property taxes and the Town of Boynton's growing debt.
However, in 1937, the town leaders had an emergency meeting. They wanted to change the name of Boynton Beach. Mail was often sent to Daytona Beach by mistake because the names were so similar. Marion White Bird, whose father was the mayor, suggested the name "Ocean Ridge." She won a contest for choosing the new name. The name was officially changed to "Ocean Ridge" in 1939. Two years later, the original Town of Boynton also changed its name to "Boynton Beach".
