History of Old Greenwich

Early Settlers and Land Ownership

Old Greenwich has a rich history! One of its first settlers was Elizabeth Fones. She was related to John Winthrop, who founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. A large area, including what is now called Greenwich Point, was known as "Elizabeth Neck" for a long time. This was because Elizabeth bought the land in 1640.

Important Landmarks and Local Spots

The Old Greenwich Railroad Station is an important landmark. It was built in 1894 and is still used by people who commute to work. It's also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's a special historical site.

Old Greenwich is also home to a big beach called Tod's Point. It's named after a former resident. This beach is now public property, meaning it belongs to the town of Greenwich. Residents can buy a pass for the whole season. If you don't live in town, you can buy a one-day pass. During the "off-season," a local golf club called Innis Arden is a popular spot for kids to go sledding.

In the 1800s, Old Greenwich was known as "Sound Beach" because it's so close to Long Island Sound. The main road through the small downtown area is still called Sound Beach Avenue today.

Old Greenwich used to have some factories. In the 1950s and 1960s, a company called Electrolux made vacuum cleaners on Forest Avenue. Also, Condé Nast had a printing factory in Old Greenwich from 1924 to 1964. They printed many famous magazines there, like Vogue and Vanity Fair.
