Where the River Flows

The Omo River is part of a larger water system. Many other rivers and lakes are nearby. These are called hydrographic slopes, which means the land areas that drain water into a particular river or lake.

River's Beginning

The Omo River starts from a small, unnamed lake inside the Assinica Wildlife Sanctuary. This lake is about 3.4 kilometres (2.1 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 385 metres (1,263 ft).

From its source, the Omo River flows for about 60.4 kilometres (37.5 mi). It winds through the wildlife sanctuary, passing through several other unnamed lakes along its journey.

River's End

The Omo River eventually flows into the Maicasagi River. From there, the water travels southwest and west into Maicasagi Lake. The current then moves through the Max Passage into Goéland Lake.

Goéland Lake is then crossed by the Waswanipi River, which is a tributary of Lake Matagami. This means the Omo River's water eventually reaches Lake Matagami.

The mouth of the Omo River is located about 60.5 kilometres (37.6 mi) northeast of where the Maicasagi River meets Maicasagi Lake. It's also about 146.5 kilometres (91.0 mi) northeast of the town of Matagami.

What's in a Name?

The name "Omo River" comes from the Cree language. It means "the river where I ate only part of the dinner." This name was officially recognized on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization in charge of place names in Quebec.
