The One-spot grass yellow (scientific name: Eurema andersonii) is a small, bright butterfly. It is also known as Anderson's grass yellow. This butterfly belongs to the family called Pieridae, which includes many yellow and white butterflies. You can find this butterfly in different parts of Asia, including India and Myanmar.
What it Looks Like
This butterfly has a unique look. The males and females can look a bit different. Their appearance can also change depending on the season, like wet or dry times of the year.
- Males: On their top wings (fore-wing), they have a dark band along the outer edge. This band is fairly wide. On their bottom wings (hind-wing), they also have a dark band.
- Females: Their top wings are usually a bit lighter in color. They also have a slightly wider dark band on their top wings. They have a dark band on their bottom wings, similar to the males.
When it's the dry season, the markings on their underside become clearer. For example, they might have a clear spot in the middle of their top wing. They might also have a patch near the tip of the wing.
Where it Lives
The One-spot grass yellow butterfly lives in many places across Asia. Scientists have found different types, or "subspecies," of this butterfly. Each subspecies might have small differences and live in specific areas.
Some of the places where you can find this butterfly include:
- Peninsular Malaya, Langkawi, and Singapore
- Islands like Sumatra, Borneo, Taiwan, West Java, Anambas, Andaman, Nias Island, and Sumba Island
- Countries like Thailand, Indo-China, Laos, Cambodia, and southern Vietnam
- Regions in India, such as South India and Sikkim
- Bhutan and southern Yunnan in China
Life Cycle
Like all butterflies, the One-spot grass yellow goes through a life cycle with different stages. This includes eggs, larvae (caterpillars), pupae, and finally, adult butterflies.
The larvae, or caterpillars, of this butterfly have been seen eating the leaves of a plant called Ventilago goughii. This plant is important for the caterpillars to grow before they turn into pupae.
