Operation Restore Hope was a special mission led by the United States and supported by many other countries. It took place in Somalia, a country in Africa. The main goal was to help the Somali people who were suffering greatly.
At the time, Somalia was going through a difficult civil war. Many people were dying from hunger because it was hard to get food to them. The United States led this effort, with protection and support from the United Nations.

Why Operation Restore Hope Started
Somalia was in a very bad situation. A civil war had torn the country apart. This made it very difficult for people to get basic things like food and medicine. Many people, especially in the southern part of Somalia, were starving.
The world saw this crisis and wanted to help. The United Nations decided that something needed to be done quickly.
The Mission to Help Somalia
The main purpose of Operation Restore Hope was to create a safe environment. This would allow humanitarian aid, like food and medical supplies, to reach the people who needed it most. The mission aimed to calm the situation down so help could get through.
After some Pakistani peacekeepers were killed, the Security Council took further action. They passed a rule called Resolution 837. This rule gave the allied forces permission to do whatever was needed to deliver aid to the Somali people. This was done under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which allows the UN to take strong action for peace and security.
Results of the Operation
Operation Restore Hope was considered a success. It helped to get much-needed aid to many people in Somalia. The mission showed how different countries could work together to help in a crisis.
