Oscar Broady (1832–1922) was a Swedish sailor who moved to the United States. He became a high-ranking officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Later, he returned to Sweden as a religious leader. He became the first president of a special school called the Swedish Baptist Bethel Seminary.

Early Life and Education

Oscar Broady was born in Uppsala, Sweden. His father worked with niter, a chemical used to make gunpowder. Oscar went to school in Stockholm. When he was 13, he started working in a store.

At age 16, he joined the Royal Swedish Navy. By 1852, he became a petty officer, which is a non-commissioned officer. He also got married that same year.

Two years later, Oscar and his wife decided to move to the United States. Sadly, his wife died during the journey at sea.

In New York, Oscar became a strong believer in the Baptist faith. He enrolled at Madison University, which is now Colgate University. He studied there while also leading a local Baptist church group. In 1861, he earned his college degree. Soon after, he married for a second time.

Serving in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, students at Madison University formed a volunteer army company. In September 1861, this group became Company C of the 61st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Oscar Broady was made their captain.

A year later, Broady was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In the spring of 1863, he became the commanding officer of his regiment. By the summer of 1864, he was leading a whole brigade in the Army of the Potomac. A brigade is a large military unit.

Just one month later, he was hurt in battle at the Second Battle of Ream's Station. Because of his injury, he had to leave his command. He was officially released from the army near Petersburg, Virginia. In 1865, he was given the honorary rank of colonel.

A Leader in the Baptist Church

In 1866, Oscar Broady went back to Sweden. He worked as a missionary for the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. In Sweden, he became the first president of the Swedish Baptist Bethel Seminary. This school later became the Stockholm School of Theology. He held this important job until 1906.

Broady also held many other trusted positions within the Swedish Baptist movement. He was a strong supporter of the Temperance movement, which encouraged people to avoid alcohol.

In 1877, Madison University gave him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. Later, in 1916, Colgate University gave him another honorary degree, a Doctor of Law.
