Outer Harbor includes a piece of land called Pelican Point. This land sticks out into the water. To its east is the suburb of Osborne. To its southwest is North Haven. In all other directions, Outer Harbor is surrounded by the Port River.
A part of the Port River, called Light Passage, is located between Pelican Point and Torrens Island. It is named after Colonel William Light, who helped found Adelaide.

Getting Around Outer Harbor
The main way to travel to Outer Harbor by public transport is by train. The Outer Harbor railway line connects the area to the center of Adelaide. The train line ends at the Outer Harbor station. This station is right next to the North Haven Golf Course and the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
Before the 1970s, Outer Harbor was quite isolated. It was separated from places like Largs Bay and Taperoo by many kilometers of sand dunes. There was only one loop road that led to the port. Today, parts of this road have different names, like Lady Gowrie Drive and Victoria Road. Since the 1930s, this road has been lined with impressive avenues of tall Norfolk Pines.
There is also one bus route, the 330, that serves the area. It's a loop service that connects to other bus services in North Haven. These bus services are run by Adelaide Metro.
A Look at Outer Harbor's History
Outer Harbor was created in the early 1900s. This was because ships were getting bigger. It also took a long time for ships to sail up the Port River to the older, inner harbor of Port Adelaide.
The very first ship to dock at Outer Harbor was the RMS Oruba. This happened on January 16, 1908. The shipping channel, which is like a deep path in the water, was made deeper. It was dredged to 14.2 meters. This was done so that very large ships, called Panamax-sized ships, could use the harbor. This work was finished in February 2006.
The Outer Harbor passenger terminal is used by many cruise ships that visit Adelaide. For example, in the 2012 cruise season, 27 cruise ships arrived there.
The Outer Harbor Post Office opened on May 9, 1910, but it closed in 1973.
For a long time, the far northern end of the Lefevre Peninsula (where Outer Harbor is) was mostly sand dunes. But in the 1970s, a new housing and marina area called North Haven was built. Because of this, the entire peninsula is now one continuous developed area.
The old Outer Harbor Pilot Station is a historic building. It is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register, which means it's an important part of the state's history.
How Outer Harbor is Governed
Outer Harbor is part of several government areas. For federal elections, it's in the Hindmarsh division. For state elections, it's in the Port Adelaide district. Locally, it's part of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield council area.
