Discovering Palmer's History
Palmer started as a telegraph station around 1886. This was when the Northern Pacific Railway was building its train line across a mountain pass called Stampede Pass. The area was first called "Green River."
In 1888, the railway company changed the name to "Palmer." They named it after George L. Palmer. He worked for the company, first finding timber and later becoming an official in their Land Department.
Early Train Routes
The original train route across Stampede Pass began in Tacoma, Washington. It went to Puyallup, Washington, then turned east. From there, it continued through Orting, Washington, Buckley, Washington, and Enumclaw, Washington, before reaching Palmer. The railway then kept going east along the Green River to Lester, Washington and Stampede Pass.
New Railway Connections
Between 1899 and 1900, the Northern Pacific Railway built a new shortcut. This new line started just east of Palmer, at a place called Palmer Junction. It crossed the Green River to Kanaskat. From Kanaskat, it went west to Ravensdale, Covington, and finally Auburn. This newer route is still used today by the BNSF Railway.
