Surtain played college football for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. He was chosen by the Miami Dolphins in the 1998 NFL draft. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs. Since 2023, he has been the defensive backs coach for Florida State University.

Early Life and School Sports

Surtain grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. He went to Edna Karr High School, where he was a star athlete. He played quarterback on the football team. As a quarterback, he threw for 753 yards and seven touchdowns. He also ran for 784 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Besides football, Surtain played baseball and ran track. In his last year of high school, he was part of the teams that won state championships in both basketball and football.

College Football Career

Surtain went to the University of Southern Mississippi. He played for their football team for four years and was a starter for two of those years. In his third year, he had an amazing season. He made 84 tackles, stopped 8 passes, and made six interceptions. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for the other team.

Professional NFL Career

Miami Dolphins (1998–2004)

In 1998, the Miami Dolphins selected Surtain in the second round of the 1998 NFL draft. He was the 44th player chosen that year. He signed a four-year contract worth $2.4 million.

In his first season, Surtain played in all 16 games as a backup player and had two interceptions. By his second year, he earned a starting spot. He and his teammate Sam Madison became one of the best cornerback pairs in the NFL.

Surtain's best years were with the Dolphins. From 2002 to 2004, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl three times in a row. The Pro Bowl is an all-star game for the NFL's best players. In 2002 and 2003, he was also named a First-team All-Pro, which means he was considered one of the very best players at his position in the entire league.

During his seven seasons with the Dolphins, Surtain had 29 interceptions and 6.5 sacks. He was known for his smart playing style and his ability to shut down the other team's best receivers.

In 2005, the Dolphins traded Surtain to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs signed him to a big seven-year contract worth over $50 million. This made him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL at the time.

With the Chiefs, Surtain was paired with another famous cornerback, Ty Law. He continued to be a strong and reliable player. In his first season with the team, he had four interceptions.

Surtain played for the Chiefs for four seasons. Injuries started to affect his playing time in his last couple of years. The Chiefs released him in 2009. Over his career with the Chiefs, he had 192 tackles and eight interceptions.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Surtain began coaching. He wanted to share his knowledge of football with younger players. He started as a high school coach at American Heritage School in Florida. He eventually became the head coach and led the team to several state championships.
