Pattazhy, also spelled Pattazhi, is a lovely village in the eastern part of the Kollam District in Kerala, India. It's located in the Pathanapuram area. This village is famous for its very old and important temple, the Pattazhy Devi Temple. Pattazhy is part of the Pathanapuram Block Panchayat and is managed by the Pattazhy Grama Panchayat within the Kollam district.

What's in a Name? The Meaning of Pattazhy

The name Pattazhy has an interesting story, though its exact meaning is not fully known. One idea is that it comes from two Malayalam words: Patt (meaning "soft") and Aazhy (meaning "ocean"). If this is true, the name could describe the kindness and deep grace of the Pattazhy Devi (Goddess) towards her followers.

Another idea is that the name Pattazhy comes from the word Bhattarika. This word means a good and religious woman. Both ideas suggest a connection to the respected Goddess of the temple.

Culture and Traditions in Pattazhy

Pattazhy is a village in the Pathanapuram area of the Kollam District in Kerala. Long ago, the land of Pattazhy was given as a special gift to Pattazhy Devi by the King of Travancore. This gift was a thank you for the help and safety the Devi provided during a big fight against the King of Kayamkulam.

When the king was expanding his kingdom, a strong follower of Pattazhy Devi named Kambithan helped him win the Kayamkulam Kingdom. To show his thanks, the king ordered that Pattazhy be named and dedicated to the Devi.

The Pattazhy Devi Temple Festival

The yearly festival at Pattazhy Devi Temple is one of the most famous temple festivals in central Travancore. The main celebrations are called Kumbhathiruvathira and Meenathiruvathira.

This festival is known for several exciting events:

  • Kambam: This refers to amazing fire works displays.
  • Aalpindi Vilakku Ezhunnallathu: This is a procession where people carry small structures. These structures are made from plantain stems and young coconut leaves, decorated with many lamps.
  • Ponnin Thirumudi Ezhunnallathu: This is a procession of the Devi's idol. This special idol is carved from pure gold and decorated with rare and precious stones.
