Peakshole Water is a small stream in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District in England. It gets its name from its main source, a famous cave called Peak Cavern. The stream flows through the charming village of Castleton.

After leaving Castleton, Peakshole Water joins another river, the River Noe, near the village of Hope. Even though it's named after Peak Cavern, a lot of its water actually comes from a powerful spring called Russet Well. This spring is a major water source for the Castleton area. Brave cave divers have explored this spring, going down about 82 feet (25 meters).

Journey of the Water

Peakshole Water is part of a bigger water system. After it joins the River Noe, the water flows into the River Derwent. The River Derwent then connects to the River Trent.

From the River Trent, the water travels all the way to the Humber estuary. An estuary is where a river meets the sea. Finally, the water from Peakshole Water reaches the North Sea.

A Look Back in Time

Long ago, Peakshole Water was very important for the people living in Castleton. The stream's power was used to run a corn mill in the village. A corn mill grinds corn into flour.

This mill was used until about 1920. The large water wheel, which was about 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters) wide, was still there until the 1950s. Today, not much is left of the old mill, just the pit where the wheel sat and the pond that held the water.

You can follow a public path from Castleton that goes past where the mill used to be. This path follows the stream closely, all the way to Pindale Road, south of Hope.

Other Streams Joining In

Peakshole Water has one main stream that flows into it. This is called Odin Sitch. Odin Sitch starts high up on the slopes of Mam Tor, near a place called Odin Mine. It joins Peakshole Water north of the visitor center in Castleton.
