Peter John Kyle was born on September 9, 1970. He is a British politician. Since July 2024, he has been the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology. He is a member of the Labour Party. He has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Hove and Portslade since 2015. Before his current role, he held several important positions. These included Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice, Shadow Minister for Schools, and Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary.

Early Life and Education

Peter Kyle grew up in West Sussex, England. He went to Felpham Comprehensive School. During his school years, he found out he had dyslexia. He later said he left school without many useful qualifications.

When he was 25, he was accepted into the University of Sussex. He studied geography, international development, and environmental studies. Later, he earned a doctorate in community development.

Working to Help Others

After university, Peter Kyle worked as an aid worker. He was a project director for a charity called Children on the Edge. He worked in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. His job was to help young people affected by conflicts like the Bosnian War and Kosovan War. He also helped set up an orphanage in Romania.

In 2006, Kyle became a special adviser for the UK government's Cabinet Office. He focused on policies to help people who were socially excluded. From 2007 to 2013, he was a leader at the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO). In 2013, he became the chief executive of Working for Youth. This new charity helped young people who were unemployed.

Parliamentary Career

In the 2015 general election, Peter Kyle was elected as the MP for Hove. He won with 42.3% of the votes.

He supported staying in the European Union during the 2016 Brexit referendum. In 2018, he voted against his own party's position. He wanted the UK to stay in the European Economic Area (EEA) after leaving the EU.

Championing Apprenticeships

Peter Kyle has strongly supported apprenticeships. In 2016, he promised to help create 1,000 apprenticeships in 1,000 days. He worked with the local council to achieve this goal.

Re-election and Key Votes

Kyle was re-elected as MP for Hove in the 2017 general election. He won with an even larger share of the votes.

In May 2018, Kyle suggested lowering the voting age to 16. He tried to pass a law for this, but it did not succeed.

In March 2019, he worked with another Labour MP, Phil Wilson. They proposed an amendment to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. This amendment would have allowed the public to vote on the Brexit deal. It did not pass, but it came very close.

He was re-elected again in the 2019 general election. After this election, he urged the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, to resign. He felt the party's loss was due to leadership issues.

In September 2020, Kyle became a vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel. He has spoken out against antisemitism within the Labour Party. He also apologized to the Jewish community. In 2014, he visited Israel and the Palestinian Territories as part of a party group.

After the October 7th attacks in Israel in 2023, Kyle condemned the violence. He attended a march against antisemitism in London in November 2023. He said that the attacks aimed to stop peace efforts.

In September 2022, he supported Labour accepting Brexit. He wanted the party to present a positive vision for Britain outside the European Union.

Due to changes in constituency boundaries, his area was renamed Hove and Portslade. In the 2024 general election, Kyle was elected as MP for this new constituency. He won with 52.4% of the vote.

Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice

In April 2020, Peter Kyle became the Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice. He worked to change laws to protect tenants from exploitation.

In February 2021, Kyle proposed a new bill for victims. Its goals included:

  • Making sure victims know their rights at the same time as offenders.
  • Creating a list of justice system leaders who ignore victims' rights.
  • Giving victims of ongoing anti-social behavior the same rights as crime victims.
  • Making the Victims' Commissioner independent from the government.

Shadow Minister for Schools

In May 2021, Peter Kyle was promoted. He became the Shadow Minister for Schools.

Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary

He was appointed Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary in November 2021.

In October 2023, at the Labour Party Conference, Kyle spoke about Artificial Intelligence (AI). He said a future Labour government would reduce rules on technology companies. This would help them develop and use AI. He wanted AI to benefit everyone. Some trade unions had concerns about this. They worried about intellectual property and companies making too much profit.

In November 2023, Kyle shared Labour's plans for AI. He wanted stricter rules for AI research companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. These rules would require more reporting, data sharing, and user safety. Kyle also suggested creating a 'Regulatory Innovation office'. This office would speed up important decisions about rules. He also proposed a new body called 'Skills England'. This body would bring together educators, government, business leaders, and trade unions. It would oversee skills needs across England.

In February 2024, Kyle announced that Labour would change how AI companies are tested. Instead of voluntary agreements, companies would have to share their test data with the government. He believed this would help the government understand AI risks better. He also met with US government officials and AI companies in Washington. These included Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, Google, Apple, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Peter Kyle supports using AI to improve public services. This includes the National Health Service and the British education system. He shared a personal story, saying, "I have seen AI tools which I believe would have caught my mum's cancer earlier. It is personal for me to get this technology used in a way which keeps families together for longer."

Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology

After the Labour Party won the 2024 United Kingdom general election, Peter Kyle was appointed to the cabinet. He became the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology in the new government led by Keir Starmer.

Personal Life

From 2016 to 2017, Peter Kyle was the chair of governors at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy.

He was in a relationship with Vlastimil Tiser for eight years. Tiser passed away in 2012. Kyle's mother also passed away from cancer six days later. He described 2012 as the "worst year of my life."

Kyle became a member of the Privy Council on July 10, 2024. This means he can use the title "The Right Honourable" for life.
