In 1966, he moved to Rockefeller University to teach. He became a director there in 1969. He led a group that studied animal behavior. This group was a partnership between the New York Zoological Society (now called the Wildlife Conservation Society) and Rockefeller University. In 1972, he became the director of another research center. This center focused on studying animal behavior in nature.

In 1989, Marler became a professor at the University of California, Davis. He retired in 1994. However, he continued to manage the local Center for Animal Behavior from 1996 to 2000. Peter Marler passed away on July 5, 2014.
