A Look Back: Pfeifer's History
Pfeifer was started in August 1876 by immigrants from a group called the Volga Germans. They named the new community after the village they had left behind in Russia. The last group of these immigrants arrived from a place called Kamenka in June 1878.
In 1884, the community of Pfeifer moved to where it is today. A post office that used to be in a place called Easdale moved to Pfeifer in 1887. It was located about two miles south, across the Smoky Hill River. This post office kept serving the area until 1961.
Starting in 1879, the people living in Pfeifer began building churches. All their efforts led to the completion of the beautiful Holy Cross Church in May 1918.
