Town Geography

Pikeville is a small town covering about 0.76 square miles (1.96 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within the town limits.

Pikeville's History

Early Beginnings

Long ago, the area where Pikeville now stands was home to a large Native American farming community called Torhunta. These Native Americans later moved back to their original home in New York and became part of the Iroquois Nation.

After they left, many new settlers came to the rich lands near the Neuse River. Many of these new settlers were Quakers.

Samuel Pike was one of these settlers. He moved to the area and settled on the south side of Nahunta Swamp. He received a large piece of land, between 2,500 and 3,000 acres, from King George II of Great Britain in 1763.

In 1785, Samuel Pike gave most of this land to his only son, Nathan. The township, the local Post Office, and later the town itself were all named after Nathan Pike.

Nathan Pike was a busy person! He owned and ran a large tavern, a shop, a trading post, and a hotel. This area was known as Pike's Junction. The first post office opened here in 1856. Between 1793 and 1835, Nathan Pike sold about 2,000 acres of his land to other families who came to live in the area.

During the Civil War

In 1865, during General Sherman's Carolinas campaign in the American Civil War, Pikeville faced challenges like many other towns in the South. Union soldiers destroyed Nathan Pike's hotel and tavern. Many other buildings and homes were also damaged or destroyed. Some of General Sherman's soldiers even camped east of Pikeville during this time.

Around the 1900s

The first school in the Pikeville area opened in 1865 at a place called Mount Carmel. In 1908, Pikeville grade school became Pikeville High School. It brought together students from several smaller schools nearby.

Later, in 1960, Charles B. Aycock High School opened in Pikeville. This school was named after a former state governor who strongly supported good education for everyone.
