A fun pillow fight happening in Lausanne, Switzerland, right in front of the courthouse!

A pillow fight flash mob is a fun and surprising event. It's a type of flash mob, where a large group of people suddenly gather in a public place to have a giant pillow fight. These events are often planned online and happen very quickly.

These huge pillow fights are different from regular ones because almost all the planning happens on the internet. They take place all over the world. Some groups even call themselves Pillow Fight Club. This name comes from a book called Fight Club. In the book, anyone could join and fight as long as they followed the rules. The Pillow Fight Clubs in London and Vancouver have rules similar to those in the book and movie.

This exciting trend uses modern ways to communicate. People spread the word using internet tools like email, chat rooms, and text messaging. This makes it seem like these big gatherings happen out of nowhere! Sometimes, people hide their pillows until a special signal, like a whistle. Then, everyone pulls out their pillows and the fight begins! These pillow fights can last from a few minutes to several hours.

Worldwide Pillow Fight Day

The biggest pillow fight flash mob ever was the Worldwide Pillow Fight Day. It was also called International Pillow Fight Day. This huge event happened on March 22, 2008. More than 25 cities around the world joined in. It was the largest "international flash mob" at that time.

According to The Wall Street Journal, over 5,000 people took part in New York City. This made it bigger than London's 2006 Silent Disco event, which was the previous record for a flash mob. People shared information about the event on social media sites like Facebook and Myspace. They also used private blogs, public forums, personal websites, and even talked to each other in person. Text messages and emails were also used to spread the news.

Many cities participated in this worldwide event. Some of them included Atlanta, Beirut, Boston, Budapest, Chicago, Copenhagen, Dublin, Houston, Huntsville, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, New York City, Paris, Pécs, San Francisco, Shanghai, Stockholm, Sydney, Székesfehérvár, Szombathely, Vancouver, Washington, D.C., and Zurich.

Big Pillow Fights in History

Of course, people have had ordinary pillow fights for a very long time. But these flash mob events are much bigger. They happen in public places and are mostly planned online. Many huge pillow fights have been organized to try and break Guinness World Records.

The current record for the largest pillow fight was set by the BBC. It happened at a Children in Need event in Minehead, Somerset, England, in 2008. A total of 3,706 people participated in that massive pillow fight!
